Equity theory proposes that individuals estimate the ratio of what has been contributed (i.e., inputs) to what has been received (i.e., outcomes) for both themselves and a chosen referent other (Adams, 1965). Equity theory focuses on determining whether the distribution of resources is fair to both relational partners. Equity is measured by comparing the ratio of contributions (or costs) and benefits (or rewards) for each person.

Equity, or more precisely, inequity is a major concern of industry, labor, and government. The fairness of exchange between employees and Equity theory is considered one of the sub‐theories of social exchange theory. Equity theory depends upon distributive justice, or the fairness that comes from the outcomes of a decision or output of resources. Equity theory allows us to predict an individual's behaviors and reactions based upon his/her human interactions.

Equity theory, most popularly known as equity theory of motivation, was first developed by John Stacey Adams, a workplace and behavioral psychologist, in 1963. According to the official definition, the equity theory is a theoretical framework, which defines the sense of fairness as the key to the staff’s motivation. In the case under consideration, Alex is fully deprived of motivation, since he feels that he is treated unfairly by his boss, who is constantly nitpicking and never gives credit to Alex’s efforts.
